Mentoring

The Penn Social Entrepreneurship Mentoring (SEM) Program will consist of both formal and informal components. Over the course of 2 months in the summer, each selected Penn student will be attached to a social entrepreneur at his/her respective social enterprise.

Formal Component

The formal component will consist of a deliverable project that is of the social enterprise’s choosing, and prospective projects range from feasibility studies on sustainable businesses to performing financial analysis for micro-finance institutions.

Informal Component

The informal component will consist of weekly or bi-weekly meetings with the student’s assigned mentor. The purpose of this informal mentoring component is to allow the participating student to learn directly from the social entrepreneur’s experience in founding and leading a social enterprise.

For more details on the participating social entrepreneurs, please refer to tabs concerning our respective partner organizations.

Knowledge Generation and Research

Under the knowledge generation / research component, the Penn student will be responsible for preparing a case study during his or her work experiences at the social enterprise over the summer. The case study will synthesize the informal mentoring component and the formal project component to detail the origins, challenges and successes of the respective social enterprises, and explain what lessons can be drawn its work.
Funding

The internships under the Penn SEM Program will be unpaid, but the University of Pennsylvania will provide a stipend that will cover the students’ living expenses during the internship period. This is made possible thanks to the generous support of The Robert M. and Diane v.S. Levy Social Impact Fund and the Wharton Ethics Program. Participating students will only be responsible the transportation fees to and from the locations of their respective internships.
