PennSEM Executive Board 2010

Matteus Pan, President

Matteus Pan is a Senior studying Computer Science and Finance at Penn. Having done non-profit educational work in Vietnam and homeless outreach with his church in Philadelphia, he has a passion for changing the world and believes changing the world isn't about doing things of great, wide-spread impact, but about creating ripples in the small world around you. Like giving a care package to a homeless person, or empowering a kid to find a job, or connecting a student to a mentor who will teach him/her to carry on the wave of change. Matt hails from Penang, Malaysia and works and plays hard - oh, and probably catches an hour of sleep every few days.

Aaron Gan, Vice President of Marketing and Innovation

Aaron is a Senior in the College majoring in Economics and Political Science. He likes to interact with and help people who are less fortunate, especially after doing so in less developed countries like Myanmar. He joined PennSEM after hearing about it from his roommate Matt, since it is a great opportunity to get involved in a new group that merges entrepreneurship and social purpose, and to learn from the wonderful team. When he's free, Aaron spends almost all his time on learning how to dance with the Penn Latin and Ballroom Dance team, having random conversations, as well as on his old passion - soccer.

Ankit Shah, Vice-President of Programs

Ankit Shah is currently studying Urban Studies at the College and Management and Social Impact at Wharton. His interests include meeting people, discussing useless things and discussing useful things. It was this last interest that brought him to PennSEM. Upon arriving to Penn campus, he was intent on finding his niche in something that not only enriched his life, but the lives of others as well. He has a strong belief in the power of education and its value as the most worthwhile investment one, so he works with PennSEM to ensure that the general Penn community stays educated regarding their power to change the world while learning about this power himself. In his free time, Ankit runs, plays tennis, eats and sleeps.

Chloe Ho, Vice President of Events

Chloe is a Junior in the College, majoring in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). Born and bred in Hong Kong, she came to the States especially to attend Penn. Passionate about community service for a long time now – having even traveled to places such as Mongolia and Thailand on social service projects – she was first introduced to the idea of social entrepreneurship as a Penn freshman. She has been hooked ever since. She feels honored to be a part of PennSEM and the Social Impact movement here at Penn, and furthers her interest by participating in the Franklin Community, an academic and residential program here at Penn that studies and advocates civic engagement. She enjoys reading, socializing and doing crosswords, and has a nearly fanatical obsession with traveling.

Having volunteered with a wide variety of initiatives in her hometown Mumbai, India, she is driven to search for innovative approaches to helping people.  She is fascinated by the dual importance of “top down” approaches to social impact, such as economic policy changes, and “bottom up” approaches, such as tutoring a child. She is particularly interested in education and approaches to poverty alleviation. She was introduced to PennSEM in her freshman year during the activities fair, and is honored to be a part of the team. Karina’s other passions include dancing, food, good conversations and soccer.

PennSEM Alumni

Shijie Lu, Co- Founder

Shijie (SJ) Lu graduated from Penn in 2009 with dual degrees from the College and Wharton. SJ founded the Penn Social Entrepreneurship Initiative with the rest of his team because he wanted Penn students to have better opportunities to pursue their interests in social enterprise. The experience taught him that everyone truly has the capacity to be a change agent, and that students can be doing so much more to grow Social Entrepreneurship at Penn. SJ will be working with Ashoka's Full Economic Citizenship Initiative in India this summer, and with the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship in Geneva this fall. He will be starting work with Deloitte Consulting in San Francisco in 2010. If you're passionate about Social Entrepreneurship and want to chat - SJ wants to hear from you!
